Mini Digger Width Explained: Track Width, Blade Width, and Clearance
Width Is Not One Number
A mini digger spec sheet can list several width figures. Track width, overall width, blade width, and transport width all answer different questions, so comparing only one number can lead to the wrong machine.
Track Width vs Overall Width
Track width measures the distance across the rubber or steel tracks. Overall width includes the canopy, mirrors, counterweight, or other parts that can extend beyond the tracks.
For site access, use the overall width. For ground pressure calculations, use the track width and the total machine weight.
Common Mini Digger Width Ranges
- Micro diggers: about 0.8 m to 1.0 m, ideal for indoor and narrow garden work.
- Small mini diggers: about 1.0 m to 1.2 m, suitable for most residential jobs.
- Compact mid-range models: about 1.3 m to 1.5 m, better for heavier excavation.
- Large mini excavators: up to about 1.6 m or more, often used on commercial sites.
How Much Clearance Should You Allow?
Do not choose a machine that exactly matches the gate opening. Allow extra room for uneven ground, slopes, obstacles, and the blade or handrails to move as the machine travels.
A practical guide is to leave at least 10 to 15 cm on each side for a straight access path, and more if the route turns or goes uphill.
Check Width Before Changing Attachments
Some buckets extend beyond the track width during digging, but transport width is normally measured with the blade raised or with a standard configuration. Confirm the shipping and working dimensions separately so the machine is not blocked on arrival.
