Trackhoe Basics: What It Is and How It Works

Trackhoe is a common industry term for an excavator, especially a crawler-mounted machine with a boom, arm, bucket, and rotating cab. The name is most often used in North America, while many other markets simply call the machine an excavator.

Main components

A trackhoe uses tracked undercarriage for stability, a rotating upper structure for reach, and a boom and arm to move the bucket. Different bucket sizes and attachments change how the machine works.

Typical tasks

Trackhoes are used for trenching, foundations, drainage, demolition, loading, land clearing, and general earthmoving. Their reach and digging depth make them useful when a wheel loader cannot access the work face.

Size and configuration

Compact, standard, and long-reach versions are available. Choose the smallest machine that provides the required reach, lift capacity, and transport flexibility.
