Excavator Sizes: How to Match Machine Class to Your Job

Excavator Sizes: How to Match Machine Class to Your Job

Match Excavator Size to Access First

Before comparing engine power, measure the site access. If the machine cannot reach the trench through the gate or along the road, every other specification is irrelevant.

Compact classes fit residential access, mid-size machines suit construction sites with wide access, and large excavators belong on open production projects.

Size Classes and Typical Work

  • Under 1 ton: landscaping, indoor work, narrow trenches.
  • 1-3.5 tons: drainage, foundations, utility lines.
  • 6-20 tons: larger earthworks and building sites.
  • 20 tons and above: quarry, mining, and major infrastructure.

Match Depth and Lift to the Plan

Write down the deepest excavation and the heaviest lift on the job. Compare those numbers with the spec sheet before choosing a class. The smallest machine that meets both requirements is usually the most economical.
