Excavator Sizes by Weight Class: What Each Range Can Handle

Excavator Sizes by Weight Class: What Each Range Can Handle

Why Weight Class Is a Useful Starting Point

Operating weight is the quickest way to place an excavator in the right size group. Heavier machines generally dig deeper, lift more, and feel more stable, while lighter machines travel more easily and suit smaller sites.

Micro and Small Excavators

Micro machines can weigh well under 1 ton and fit through doors and narrow gates. They suit shallow trenches, landscaping, and work beside buildings where access is very tight.

Small compact excavators up to about 3 tons are common on residential projects. They combine enough digging force for footings and drainage with the ability to ride on a standard trailer.

Compact and Mid-Size Models

Mid-size compact excavators from roughly 3 to 6 tons can handle deeper foundations, larger utility runs, and heavier attachments while still being simpler to move than full-size equipment.

They often have more auxiliary hydraulic flow, which supports breakers, augers, and grapples for a wider range of work.

Full-Size Excavators

Full-size machines are for open commercial and infrastructure sites where transport and space are not limiting. They provide much greater depth, reach, and production rates, but they also need more room and heavier haulage.

Weight class narrows the choice, but the final decision should also compare digging depth, reach, bucket capacity, and hydraulic flow. Two machines in the same weight class can still behave very differently on site.
